More male staff required

More male childcare workers are needed to support the Government's extended schools programme, the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) said last week. Speaking after the launch of a new report, Men Into Childcare, Jenny Watson, acting chair of the EOC, said, 'Childcare services, particularly the new plans for extended schools, will not meet parents' needs if they can't recruit enough staff - and they can't do so unless they recruit men.'

According to the EOC, an estimated 163,000 new childcare workers are needed by 2008 if the Government is to deliver its childcare expansion programme.

This includes the recruitment of staff in extended schools.
