More research needs to be done into epilepsy

More research needs to be done into the part deprivation has to play in the development of epilepsy, says the National Society for Epilepsy. The NSE's call follows a report in the British Medical Journal which said that people from deprived backgrounds are more than twice as likely to have epilepsy. The NSE said there was likely to be no single cause leading to an increased risk of epilepsy, but that a number of factors contributed, including poor nutrition, trauma, infection and birth defects. 'All these are known to be more common in socially and economically deprived sectors of the community,' it added.
