More toys for children in deprived areas

* The Government has pledged 6m for 150 new toy libraries for children living in deprived areas of England. The scheme, unveiled last week by employment and equal opportunities minister Margaret Hodge, will enable parents to borrow toys and play equipment for their children, and some of the libraries will offer onsite play facilities and care support for children.

The scheme, unveiled last week by employment and equal opportunities minister Margaret Hodge, will enable parents to borrow toys and play equipment for their children, and some of the libraries will offer onsite play facilities and care support for children.

The libraries will be run by a mixture of volunteers and paid staff, and will provide additional resources for all formal childcare providers within the community, including childminders, out-of-school clubs and nurseries.

Mrs Hodge said, 'Every parent knows toy and play equipment can be expensive. As a result, many young children from deprived areas are going without essential early play that is crucial to child development. We're determined to change that.'
