School support staff make a vital contribution to pupils' learning and achievement. With the introduction of a new programme of training and assessment, staff who achieve higher level teaching assistant status will be able to offer proven skills to support teachers. The Teacher Training Agency has developed and published standards for higher level teaching assistants, linking to those for Qualified Teacher Status. These reflect the contribution HLTAs are expected to play in teaching and learning activities - for example, contributing to the planning and preparation of lessons; monitoring pupils' participation and progress; providing feedback to teachers; and giving constructive support to pupils as they learn. * More information about HLTAs can be found at www.hlta.gov.org.
