MPs are told about EYPs and Sure Start impact

Early Years Professional Status is a confused qualification, which was created to make quality affordable for the private sector, a teaching union representative has told MPs.

Appearing before the Children, Schools and Families Select Committee in Westminster, John Bangs, head of education at the National Union of Teachers, argued that the Government has a 'belt and braces' attitude towards qualifications and cited research such as the Effective Provision of Pre-School Education (EPPE) study which found that nursery school provision led by qualified teachers produces better outcomes for children.

Mr Bangs said, 'The Sure Start Children's Centre programme should have built on the strengths and contributions of nursery schools, but instead, in some areas, children's centres are replacing them. A quarter of nursery schools have closed since the introduction of Sure Start Children's Centres.'
