MPs support better pay

More than 100 MPs have pledged their support for improved pay and conditions for early years and childcare workers by signing a House of Commons early day motion. The Pre-School Learning Alliance (PLA) tabled the motion - a device used to draw attention to an issue by inviting MPs to demonstrate their support - in June after the launch of the second phase of its 'Meeting the workforce challenge' campaign.

It aims to address the estimated 180,000 shortfall in childcare workers by developing a coherent strategy on recruitment, training and remuneration, including involving the voluntary sector, supporting a number of routes to qualifications and an equitable pay structure.

PLA chief executive Steve Alexander said the motion indicated 'considerable cross-party parliamentary support'.
