My story

Letting children act out their own story with desirable alternative behaviour is a useful device that has been employed by Camden's Early Years Intervention Team Most of our referrals from early years settings and practitioners are about managing and changing inappropriate behaviours from children under five.

Most of our referrals from early years settings and practitioners are about managing and changing inappropriate behaviours from children under five.

Many patterns of behaviour develop in the home through interaction with parents and siblings. Where children have difficult behaviour, parents often feel bewildered about what to do. It is important for both nursery and home to work together on teaching new behaviours.

We offer parents ideas and strategies which are manageable and can give the child some consistency. One of the most successful ideas we have employed is 'behaviour scripts'. These are loosely based on 'social stories', a technique developed by psychologist Carol Gray, who has worked with children and young people on the autistic spectrum. These social stories help children to understand the cues and actions for particular social situations (for further information go to www.thegraycenter.org and click on the 'Social Stories' box).
