My student life

Students look back on their hopes and fears when they embarked on the Early Childhood Studies degree course, and look ahead to what think they will gain Early Childhood Studies degrees were set up in several universities in the 1990s to create well-qualified professionals with a broad understanding of early years work. As a group of students about to gain our BA (Hons) in Early Childhood Studies from the University of East London, we would like to comment on our experiences of doing the degree.

I have always known that I wanted to work with children, but in what capacity I was never too sure. I did a stint working for an insurance company, then got an NNEB. Nobody ever told me I could go to university and study for a degree. My experience and also my age seemed irrelevant for higher education. I began to think that my dream was really unattainable.
