Nannies' salaries

Last week, Nursery World featured in most of the national newspapers as they picked up on our nanny salary survey published in Professional Nanny. There was a certain amount of shock that nannies in some areas are being paid a reasonable salary, with rises well over inflation. But the level of nannies' salaries should not be seen as a problem - rather, it is parents' inability to pay them because there is no tax relief available. Childcarers of all types deserve good pay for a demanding and vital job, but this will not happen if families are unable to meet the fees. More Government subsidies and tax allowances are needed urgently.

One way of reinforcing what a great job many childcarers do, and raising the status of this work, is to give awards to the very best in the field. So turn to page 14 for your chance to enter someone for the Excellence in Childcare Awards 2002, run by Kids' Clubs Network with Nursery World and Prima magazine, and supported this year by the Department for Education and Skills. New categories for nursery workers and childminders add to playworkers, childcarers and creative activity programme.
