Nanny loophole in bureau check

The head of the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) has admitted that nannies deemed unsuitable to work with children could still be able to get jobs with families after the CRB comes into force from 1 March. Days before it goes 'live' in England and Wales, CRB chief executive Bernard Herdan acknowledged that nannies are a problem for the new agency because not only are they are not registered childcarers and many do not go through nanny agencies to get jobs, but also the system has not been set up to allow individuals such as parents to have access to its most stringent levels of checks.

But Mr Herdan cited the example of Ofsted's registering and regulating childminders in England as a possible way forward. He said, 'From the CRB point of view, any kind of regulatory framework will provide a solution and act as an intermediary between a nanny and parents because it needs a solution.'
