Nestle drops use of artificial colours and additives

Nestle, which today (2 March 2012) announced plans to remove artificial colours, flavours and preservatives from its entire range, is the first major confectioner to replace more than 80 ingredients found in its products with natural alternatives.

The confectioner, which is behind brands including Kit Kat, Smarties and Aero, will use extracts from fruits, vegetables and edible plants to replace artificial ingredients.

Sally Bunday, founder of the Hyperactive Children’s Support Group, a charity which supports children with ADHD and other hyperactive disorders and their families through a dietary approach, said, ‘It is great that Nestle are doing this and I hope other major confectioners will follow their lead.

‘There have been many studies that have indicated a link between artificial colourings and preservatives with hyperactivity in children. However, little has been done in response to this. Doctors still fail to suggest to parents whose children are hyperactive about changing their diet despite all the research and advice.

‘Nestle’s move is a very good step in recognising that it’s not all fairytales and that what children eat could affect them. We recommend that parents only buy foods for their children that are natural and if they are unsure to leave them.'

She added, ‘I don’t know why there is such reluctance for a blanket ban.’
