New cash offered for inclusive play

Organisations encouraging inclusive play for both disabled and able-bodied children in England have been urged to apply for a second round of grants worth 2.8m from Better Play. The programme, a partnership between Barnardo's and the Children's Play Council and funded by the New Opportunities Fund from the national lottery, is inviting applications from organisations that can demonstrate they are moving towards inclusion in their play services for children aged from five to 16.

The programme, a partnership between Barnardo's and the Children's Play Council and funded by the New Opportunities Fund from the national lottery, is inviting applications from organisations that can demonstrate they are moving towards inclusion in their play services for children aged from five to 16.

Better Play defines inclusion as 'provision that is open and accessible to all, and takes positive action in removing disabling barriers, so that disabled and non-disabled children can participate'.

The programme would like to hear from voluntary organisations and community groups, and those wishing to support good practice. Grants will range from 5,000 to 35,000, of which 7,000 is available for capital expenditure - which must be part of the overall project - and the projects will be funded for a maximum of one year only.
