New childhood degree from Sheffield University

Careers & Training
A new BA in Education, Culture and Childhood, invites students to engage critically with issues around child development and the meaning of childhood, and provide a detailed understanding of the themes underpinning current educational policy and practice.

Offered by the University of Sheffield's School of Education, the degree programme takes an interdisciplinary approach, drawing on psychology, sociology, politics, cultural studies, history and philosophy.

Level 1

At Level 1 students undertake a diverse range of modules which provide a solid foundation for the full course. These include child psychology and the sociology of education, a module looking at comparative histories of education, and others exploring the curriculum and how childhood has been portrayed across different societies and at different times. Another module helps students to develop both subject-specific and transferable study skills.

Levels 2 and 3

Levels 2 and 3 provide a wide choice of modules. These include psychology and learning communities, educational policy, globalisation and inclusive education, digital literacies, and teaching and learning. These supplement the core modules which, at levels 2 and 3, are centred around research and critical inquiry. A core level 2 module provides a grounding in educational research methods, while at level 3 students gain insight into the rich and varied research taking place withing the course module. Students will conduct their own small scale research project and complete an extended essay.

The degree is designed to equip students with a range of high-level transferable skills, including communication, interpersonal, research, planning, management and organisational skills. A level 2 placement module provides the opportunity to develop and apply these skills in the workplace.
