New documentary highlights the early years staffing crisis

A new documentary highlighting the ongoing recruitment and retention crisis within the sector has been made.

Created by early childhood platform Famly, the documentary, ‘Where are all the early years educators’ features interviews with parents and professionals working in the sector including safeguarding trainer Rachel Buckler, NCFE’s sector manager for education and childcare, Janet King, owners and directors of nurseries.

It comes after the Department for Education estimated that an additional 40,000 Staff are needed for the full roll out of the expanded offer.

The documentary is available to view on the Famly website as well as YouTube.

Director of Brand and Comms Matt Arnerich said, ‘Keir Starmer is right that it’s time for change - time for a change to the way our educators are treated, if we have any hope of having any left.

‘Pretty soon, we’ll have hundreds of new MPs within the House of Commons and that’s why now is the time to release this documentary and get it to as many of them as possible, to make sure they prioritise staffing in early years and not just in schools.

‘We can’t carry on like this, only expanding the entitlement to parents, without a proper workforce strategy in place to ensure there are staff to provide the education they so desperately need.’

Ahead of the general election, Famly is asking people in the sector to share the documentary with their future MP, to make sure that solving the workforce crisis is a ‘clear focus’ for the next government.

The documentary was produced in-house at Famly, written by Early Education Editor Julia Rose, and filmed, produced, and edited by Videographer Lauren Owens, with support from Miguel Bisbal and Mayfield Ngondonga.
