New drive calls for children's centres

Childcare charity the Daycare Trust is calling on the Government to set up a nationwide programme of children's centres. The Trust is launching its campaign as an informal cross-departmental review of childcare draws to a close.

The Trust is launching its campaign as an informal cross-departmental review of childcare draws to a close.

Stephen Burke, director of Daycare Trust, said, 'The Government's review of childcare provides a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to set a vision for childcare for all children and parents who want it. Despite the move forward since the National Childcare Strategy was launched in 1998, too many families are struggling behind closed doors and missing out on the benefits of affordable, quality childcare.

'It's time to raise everyone's ambitions for childcare. Children's centres in every community would be an investment in all our futures.'

In 'Raising expectations: Time for children's centres', the Trust suggests that children's centres should be a universal public service. Last June it published a report which estimated that it would cost 2.5 billion a year to deliver a national programme of children's centres by 2010.
