New light shed on parenting

The experiences of 'millions of ordinary families' are the subject of a round-up of research into parenting published this week.

Rather than blaming 'bad parenting' for children and young people's'problem' behaviour and dysfunctional family life, the Joseph RowntreeFoundation (JRF) sets out to look at the differences in parenting infamilies and the implications for family policies and supportservices.

The review commissioned by JRF into seven topics of existing researchlooks at parenting from the perspectives of parents, children and blackand minority ethnic families and those living in poverty.

One paper finds that there is 'no clear-cut causal link between povertyand parenting. Rather, it is likely that different individuals respondin different ways to financial hardship.'

Another study finds that young children's relationships with theirmothers typically affect their development more than those with theirfathers.
