New NI care standards

New registration and inspection standards for children's services for under-12s in Northern Ireland were sent out for consultation last week. Drafted by the Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety (DHSSPS), the documents set out minimum care standards for the country's day nurseries, creches, pre-school sessional care (playgroup settings), out of-school care and childminding.

Drafted by the Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety (DHSSPS), the documents set out minimum care standards for the country's day nurseries, creches, pre-school sessional care (playgroup settings), out of-school care and childminding.

Early years, childcare professionals and parents have until 20 December to comment on the proposed new standards of care. Responses will be used to refine and amend the standards, which will become fully operational on 1 April next year.

More than 600 professionals and organisations were involved in the development of the draft standards, which are designed to provide childcare service users with a clear understanding of the quality of care they should expect.
