News Analysis: Course cull put on hold amid review

Plans to rationalise the sector's 361 early years qualifications in the light of the Nutbrown Review have been put on hold by the Children's Workforce Development Council.

Achievements deemed full and relevant on its Qualifications List willnow be available to new learners beyond spring 2012, creating furtheruncertainties around the status of the new Level 3 Diploma for theChildren and Young People's Workforce.

The move comes in support of the Government's review of early yearsqualifications, led by Professor Cathy Nutbrown. A statement about anyfuture cut-off dates will be made in the Government's response to thereview, which is expected to be published in summer 2012.

Despite CWDC efforts at rationalising qualifications, the sector remainsconfused about which ones are still available to study and about thevalue of legacy qualifications.

The extended Level 3 Diploma for the Children and Young People'sWorkforce was recently launched by CACHE as a two-year, college-basedcourse for younger learners. However, it has yet to be confirmed whetherit will be awarded UCAS points and provide a bridge to degree-levelstudy.
