No place like home

I read with interest the news story 'New code for home carers' (27 February) and would like to comment on behalf of the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC). The childcare tax credit is only awarded if the childcarer is a registered home carer. The REC believes it is nonsensical that under the new regulations, a nanny can only be approved as a registered home carer having first had her own house inspected by Ofsted. As most nannies do not have their own houses, the REC believes this is a ridiculous situation, particularly as nannies look after children in the parents' home.

The National Childminding Association (NCMA) leaflet is incorrect, as it says nannies are not checked against any standards. All members of the childcare division of the REC have to adhere to strict guidelines, such as taking up two references about the nanny, so the NCMA leaflet is wrong.
