A bus for us

Children at Educare Nursery in Whitehaven, Cumbria, celebrated Big RhymeTime Week, organised by Cumbria County Council, with a series of specialevents across five days. The highlight of the week was the arrival of abus for Wheels on the Bus day, when the children took turns inpretending to be bus drivers.

Soaring sunflower

Mill Hill Pre-School in London reports that children were astounded tofind that one of the sunflowers they had planted in the setting's gardengrew to more than 12 feet tall.

Going over the bridge

Children at Shipston Pre-School in Warwickshire learned the value ofteamwork when they worked together to create a bridge from crates,boxes, wood and rope to re-enact the story of The Three Billy GoatsGruff. Deputy manager Rachel Rossiter said, 'The idea of building thebridge together was to support the children's transition from pre-schoolto school.'

Happy twenty-first

Staff at kidsunlimited in Wilmslow, Cheshire, hosted a special autumnfayre for pupils past and present and their families to mark thesetting's 21st anniversary. The event included a visit from Oreo andFriends Exotic Animals, a children's entertainer, face painting and therelease of 21 red and green balloons.

Fruitful festival

Woodlands Day Nursery and Pre-school in Woodford Green, Londoncelebrated Harvest Festival with a range of food-related activities. Onewas a fruit and vegetable dress-up day, where one member of staffdressed as a bunch of grapes and another as a strawberry. Children alsocollected food to give to elderly residents living in the area.

Jeans for Genes

Staff and children from Gladstone Children's Centre, Gladstone ParkPre-school, Beeches Pre-School and Tiny Tots Creche, all inPeterborough, Cambridgeshire, donned their denim to raise money on Jeansfor Genes Day on 1 October.

Fun in the forest

Children at Footsteps Day Nursery in Stratford-upon-Avon were excitedwhen they started their first 'forest school' session of the new schoolterm. Deputy manager Laura Wakeham said, 'Everyone had great funcollecting lots of objects from our woodland site. They also took aspecial interest in all the birds we could hear.'

Get the right bin

Children at Little Acorns Day Nursery in Washington, Tyne and Wear, havebeen learning about the importance of recycling. The nursery's newrecycling programme, in partnership with Asda supermarkets, the owner ofthe site, encourages children to collect and sort rubbish before placingit into the correct bins.

Four-year-old Robbie Willetts from Tops Day Nurseries in Wareham,Dorset, has fun with a mackerel during a 'survival day'. Children andtheir fathers learned how to make a fishing rod from cane, build acampfire and create an outdoor den. Deputy manager Shelley Glazier said,'This was a perfect family activity to get the dads more involved. Theyloved bringing in raw fish and resources to make dens.'
