Asquith Day Nursery in Edinburgh welcomed five-year-old Ollie Tomczyk(pictured far left) on their eco-committee, set up a couple of years agoto raise awareness of sustainable development issues in the nursery.Despite Ollie having left the nursery to start primary school, staffwere so impressed with his contribution and dedication to saving theplanet that they asked him to continue to attend the meetings and helpthem achieve a silver eco-award.

100 years of charity

Oxfordshire charity PACT (Parents and Children Together) celebrated itscentenary this month with a service at the Minster Church of St Mary theVirgin in Reading, where children helped light 100 candles to mark 100years.

Two Outstanding

Staff at Christchurch Kindergarten in Harrow, London, were thrilled tobe graded outstanding by Ofsted after their latest inspection. Theinspectors commented on the setting's 'ability to meet the needs ofchildren through excellent input in partnerships with otherprofessionals and parents'.

Teddies Nursery in Crawley, West Sussex, managed by Bright Horizons, hasalso received an outstanding Ofsted rating. Nursery manager Louise Peeksaid, 'The recognition has been a fantastic reward for the commitmentand dedication shown by the entire team. I am very proud of them.'

Food for thought

Roadside restaurant chain Little Chef has teamed up with the socialmarketing campaign Reading for Life and Puffin Books to promote thebenefits and enjoyment of reading. The Little Chef Kids' menus are beingtransformed into Reading for Life - Reading Adventures, featuringcharacters from popular Roald Dahl stories The BFG, James and the GiantPeach and The Twits, along with games with prizes. Seeds for bread

Early years settings are invited to take part in the Bake Your Lawnscheme, which encourages children to learn how bread is made by growingtheir own wheat, milling it, baking it and eating it. Talking book

A new publication is aimed at helping practitioners consider thesignificant role that the physical environment can play in supportingboys' speaking and listening skills.
