They say a picture is worth a thousand words, but in the Foundation Stage, it is worth a million, writes Andrew Trythall. Digital photography is cheap, it's easy, and you don't even need a computer to print out your images. But which digital camera do you choose, and what do you do when you get it? Digital cameras can be split into two types:

* Digital cameras that save images on to a disk or CD. After you have taken your picture, you then need to take the disk out of the camera and put it into the computer to get your images.

* Digital cameras that connect directly to your computer via a USB port.

All modern computers have USB sockets, but these cameras are more difficult to set up initially (perhaps get an ICT-proficient parent to help).

However, once the setting up is done, even young children can be downloading images, so they are quicker and easier to use.
