Follow the example of Chelwood Nursery School in Lewisham and set up a photographic display that will support children's independence

Planned learning intentions

To operate independently within the environment

To show an awareness of own needs

To show increasing independence in carrying out a task

Resources

Permanent photographic display fixed on window between outdoor and indoor area ,covered water jug ,disposable cups ,waste bin

Step by step

* Talk to the children about the sequence involved in pouring out a drink of water.

* Select key actions from the sequence and take photographs, with a digital camera, of a child pouring and drinking a cup of water, disposing of the waste and refilling the jug if necessary.

* Print out the photographs, and put them in the correct sequence, discussing the vocabulary of events with the children.

* Make labels for each photograph.

* Fix the photographs and labels, in the correct order, to a large piece of card and laminate.

* Ensure that the display is in a prime location, with all the resources necessary for children to access fresh water independently.

Activities

* Ask the children open-ended questions about keeping healthy, eating, drinking water and other drinks. Promote discussion about keeping cool in hot weather - playing in the shade, wearing sunhats and drinking lots of water.

* Encourage all children, and in particular new children, to look at the display and help themselves to drinks.

Extension activities

* Create similar permanent displays, using the same format, to support children's autonomy and independence throughout the setting. For example, the sequence of using the toilet and then washing hands, or painting a picture and putting it on a rack to dry.

* Use a similar format to make a display about an adult-led activity such as planting seeds or making pizzas. Include 'speech bubbles' for adults to scribe children's comments about the photographs and their learning, or for children to make their own recordings.
