Nursery education 'particularly high'

The quality of nursery education in England is 'particularly high', said Chief Inspector of Schools Christine Gilbert last week, as Ofsted published its annual report, which included figures originally released in August on early years settings (News, 28 August). The review of education and children's services in England found that nearly two-thirds of early education settings are rated good or outstanding, and that the number of providers rated outstanding for early education has grown from 4 per cent in 2005-2006 to 8 per cent in 2007-2008. However, Ms Gilbert added that too many vulnerable children are being let down by children's services and that local authorities are not always learning from the worst cases of abuse.
