Nursery opens in Glasgow park

Scotland's first city-based outdoor kindergarten has been officially opened by the children's minister for Scotland, Adam Ingram.

Mr Ingram met children and staff last week at the Woodland Outdoor Kindergarten, based at Pollock Country Park in Glasgow.

He presented the kindergarten with a plaque, which has been secured to an oak tree within the pre-school's grounds.

The kindergarten cares for children aged from two years nine months to five years and offers full- and part-time placements.

Children meet at Eastwood Parish Church each morning and walk to Pollock Country Park, where they are encouraged to choose a 'base camp' for the day. Staff set up rain shelters, hammocks, a tent and bio-toilet at the camp.

Activities include den building, tree climbing, scavenger hunts, animal tracking, minibeast hunts and forest crafts.

Owners Debbie Simmers and Alison Latta decided to open the outdoor kindergarten after looking for childcare for their daughters.

Ms Simmers said, 'We were both aware of the outdoor kindergarten concept through reading various articles and were surprised that no such option existed in Glasgow or the west of Scotland. We decided the answer was to set one up ourselves.

'We visited a nature kindergarten and modified ideas from settings in Germany and Scandinavia. We also spoke to parents to determine whether a city outdoor kindergarten would be of interest.'

Ms Simmers, who has seven years' experience and a qualification in Childcare Services Management, takes part in the woodland sessions along with Ms Latta. They have two full-time and part-time staff who are qualified early years and forest school practitioners.

They say they hope to open a second site in the north side of Glasgow early next year.
