Nursery rhymes: their place in children's learning

Nursery rhymes play an important part in laying the foundations of early literacy and developing children's mathematical skills. Staff in many early years settings compile a selection of 'core rhymes', which they use from week to week with the children.

Staff in many early years settings compile a selection of 'core rhymes', which they use from week to week with the children.

'Core rhymes' should be meaningful to the children, and we hope that the rhymes we have chosen for our series are popular with most children.

To make the most of core rhymes:

* Concentrate on one core rhyme a week.

* Make sure that all practitioners use the same version of the rhyme.

* Display the 'rhyme of the week' on your parents' noticeboard or send them a copy. (It is important that all families become familiar with the rhymes.)
