Ofsted own goal

Last week I was dismayed by new information from Ofsted. Amendments to the regulations and changes to the procedure for ascertaining the suitability of staff in full and sessional day care leave children at greater risk of abuse. Regulations no longer forbid the threat of physical punishment, but persistent threats can constitute emotional abuse and often cause long-term damage. If this isn't bad enough, Ofsted no longer processes DC2s which could reveal 'soft' information not disclosed on a CRB check and employers run a greater risk of employing unsuitable staff.

Ofsted is no longer going to conduct CRB checks and some employers may not ensure that they are carried out. Another relaxation in regulations means it is likely to be three years before Ofsted checks that recruitment procedures are adequate and that staff have clearance. Finally, Ofsted tells us that an indicator for early inspection is a high turnover of staff. Good idea, a great indicator of possible problems; but how will they know? The new DC3 notification of staff changes only covers management.
