As families gather for the holiday season, spare a thought for single parents and the nannies they depend on, says Karen Faux If you haven't encountered a position working for a single-parent family, there is a very good chance that in the course of your nannying career you will do so. According to the Single Parent Action Network (SPAN), 23 per cent of UK families with children are looked after by a single parent, and that adds up to around 1.3 million households.

You may wonder how such a job is any different from its two-parent counterpart. Of obvious concern to nannies is whether very long hours are inevitable. And will there be an appropriate level of pay, when it's likely the family may be relying on one income?
