One in four children in Scotland - 240,000 in total - lives in poverty

One in four children in Scotland - 240,000 in total - lives in poverty, according to a five-year study. In 1979 only one child in eight lived below the poverty line. Poverty in Scotland 2007 by the Child Poverty Action Group also recorded that nearly a quarter of children in poverty were living in a household where one adult works full-time, and 77,000 children officially recognised as living in poverty do not receive a free school meal. The National Foundation forEducational Research (NFER) has developed a new statistical model that enables local authorities to compare and assess their children's services with similar authorities, or their 'statistical neighbours'. Commissioned by the DfES and endorsed by Ofsted, the model focuses exclusively on the five Every Child Matters outcome indicators.
