One security safeguard bars another

I considered myself fortunate to find two enthusiastic staff willing to work during the summer at our nursery. To speed up their start date I asked them to contact their tutors at Walsall College to get a copy of their police checks. I was surprised when they informed me that their college would not release them due to its data protection policy. This is ludicrous. Both the students and I have pleaded with Walsall College to release the checks, but it has refused to do so.

We currently have two students on childcare courses who cannot take part in any toileting or nappy changing because Walsall College will not allow us a copy of their police checks. Why do they bother to get police checks in the first place? This policy strongly disadvantages their students.

As a result, we have had to apply for the students' police checks to be done by the Criminal Records Bureau through Ofsted. But having to wait for clearance from the CRB means the busy summer period will be over and Christmas will be looming. We have never had this problem with other colleges. I would welcome the opinion of other nursery managers.
