FARMS GROW IDEAS

How refreshing to read Laura Marcus' article about learning on the farm(2 December). Farming has suffered much bad press in recent yearsdespite all the hard work of the farmers in keeping us all fed. This hasbeen influenced by a society that has increasingly and alarmingly becomedivorced from first-hand experiences about food, farming and nature, despite human existence being reliant upon it.

It is reassuring that the teaching and early years profession is wakingup to the plethora of learning and developmental opportunities forchildren of all ages. Indeed, it is possible to base a whole curriculumon this subject, and it will help children develop informed choicesabout the food they eat as they grow older and about maintaining asustainable environment. There are many misconceptions that organic foodis always better for people and the environment, so we must nurturechildren's curiosity so they can understand the bigger picture.
