Out-of-school clubs make links in a chain

Out-of-school providers are looking to follow in the footsteps of nursery chains as more of them emerge as businesses operating at a number of sites. One such company is School's Out, founded two years ago by former PE teacher Glenn Wallis. It operates out-of-school clubs at ten primary schools across the London boroughs of Croydon and Sutton, with two more in the pipeline. It has bid successfully for 250,000 funding from the New Opportunities Fund.

It has bid successfully for 250,000 funding from the New Opportunities Fund.

Mr Wallis said it was company policy to encourage staff to access training, which had helped it to recruit and retain employees. Some are taking NVQs level 2 and 3 in playwork and two have qualified as NVQ assessors. While School's Out had paid for some of the training, much of it had been subsidised by local authorities.
