Outdoor and holiday play gain with grants

A specialist wildlife garden, a toy library with special needs equipment and play packs for childminders are among projects across Scotland to benefit from a share of more than 1m in grants from the New Opportunities Fund (NOF). David Campbell, NOF board member for Scotland, said the funding reflected local needs and welcomed grants focused on improving outdoor play facilities. 'Playing and learning outdoors is something many parents took for granted when they were children, but in this day and age children are often restricted to indoor supervision.

David Campbell, NOF board member for Scotland, said the funding reflected local needs and welcomed grants focused on improving outdoor play facilities. 'Playing and learning outdoors is something many parents took for granted when they were children, but in this day and age children are often restricted to indoor supervision.

'These grants give them the chance to get out into the fresh air and play, which is a vital start in life for us all,' he added.

The Strathy Bairns Nursery at Kingussie in the Highlands will use its grant of nearly 3,000 to transform a large area of ground around the 30-place facility into an outdoor wildlife garden. Lesley Hurrell, administrator and company secretary at the nursery who will lead the project, said, 'The garden will be a place not simply for play but one for learning. There will be a gardening patch, new bird boxes and permanent outdoor tables so that the younger children can work outside in fine weather.'
