Parenting Fund 'just a drop in the ocean'

Children's charities have given a mixed response to a 15.5m Government fund to support vulnerable parents across England. NCH described the Parenting Fund, launched last week by Margaret Hodge, minister for children, as 'a drop in the ocean'. The Fund will provide 9.5m in major grants and 6m in local grants to voluntary and community organisations working to help parents over the next two years.

Caroline Abrahams, NCH director of policy, said, 'Nobody can pretend it will make any more than a small contribution to the lives of families across the country who are desperately in the need of support.'

But the Fund was welcomed by Barnardo's. Alan Coombe, its principal policy and practice officer, said, 'Being a parent is one of the most important jobs any of us will do, yet there is still relatively little help on offer for parents.
