But the success of all these initiatives depends on getting parents involved. It is crucial that parents play an active role, for children attending settings involving their parents register higher levels of social and educational attainment throughout their lives.
There is some evidence that the child's attendance in pre-schools can help to generate parents' interest. Research has found that the initial cognitive gains a child made as a result of pre-school generate greater parental interest in their child's education than would otherwise be the case. This, in turn, serves as a positive stimulus for the child to achieve in later school years, since educational achievement has become a value nurtured in the home.
