Pasta please

Reading the letter 'Pasta is for eating' (23 November), I felt the writer was going slightly too far in her anger at the fact that Nursery World had an article about pasta activities ('Bella pasta!', 19 October). I can take on board the point that using pasta or other food for activities rather than eating might be wasteful, but nursery nurses have been doing pasta activities for years, and I think it is a great material for art and craft and cooking activities. Not only can you show children how to use it for art and craft, you can also teach them that it is a healthy food which gives the body energy.

And if the writer is concerned that using pasta 'gives children the wrong message about conserving the world's resources', they can be encouraged to take care of the environment by other methods. Make recycling fun by building junk models and so on.
