They asked the public in Stockton, Newcastle, Manchester, Edinburgh and Glasgow to sign a petition calling for the Government to ensure employers implemented fair pay systems.

Karen Constantine, head of equal rights for the GMB, said that it was 'a national disgrace' that after 30 years of equal pay legislation women working full-time were 19 per cent and part-time 40 per cent worse off than men.

The petition will be handed to the trade and industry secretary, Patricia Hewitt, who is also women's minister.
