PLA campaign praised by MPs

The prime minister has given his support to the Pre-school Learning Alliance's Changing Lives, Changing Life campaign. Tony Blair said the campaign, which is calling for action be taken to develop the capacity of community-based pre-schools and for measures to support young children growing up in poverty wherever they live, 'demonstrated clearly the potential for childcare settings not only to provide first class experiences for children, but to engage parents in their own continuing educational development and to provide experiences which will help them to return to study or move into work'.

Mr Blair's comments followed the tabling of an Early Day Motion congratulating the Pre-school Learning Alliance on its work with young children that has been signed by 145 MPs.

He added, 'We need to ensure that no child in this country is prevented from realising his or her full potential. For this to happen, children need the active involvement and support of their parents throughout the pre-school years and while they are at school.'
