Plans to provide 400m of funding for recruiting and training teaching assistants

Education secretary David Blunkett has revealed Pounds 400m of funding for recruiting and training teaching assistants in primary and secondary schools from 2002 to 2004. Local education authorities will decide how to allocate it. Mr Blunkett said, ''I announced more money for teaching assistants two years ago, and this signals that schools will be able to keep that extra level of help for a further two years.'
