Pre-school centres praised for quality

Pre-school centres across Scotland have been praised by HMI for providing high-quality provision. A report published last week, Standards and Quality in Scottish Pre-school Education 1997-2001, provides benchmark information about the quality of pre-school education on April 2002, at which point important changes took place in the regulation and funding of pre-school education. Funding for pre-school education ceased to be ring-fenced and was re-integrated into local authorities' budgets, and responsibility for registering and inspecting pre-school education and care passed to the new Scottish Commission for the Regulation of Care. HM Inspectorate of Education will work with the Commission to inspect pre-school education according to the new national care standards for early education and childcare.
