Priorities for Kevin Curran

The new general secretary of the GMB union, Kevin Curran, has said his priorities would be 'those that I campaigned on' - employment rights, pensions, equality and opposition to the privatisation of public services. Mr Curran, the union's former Northern region secretary, added, 'I want a union that retains our values and builds on the things we do well but also begins to address the needs of the modern workplace and those who work in it.' The new deputy general secretary is Debbie Coulter, senior organiser for the GMB in Yorkshire and the first woman to be elected to this position. The GMB represents 700,000 people, among them school support staff including nursery nurses and teaching assistants.
