Raising awareness of laws on private fostering

Raising awareness of the laws on private fostering is the focus of a campaign that began this week.

Authorities have to be informed if a child is looked after by anyoneother than a close relative. The campaign, organised by the BritishAssociation for Adoption and Fostering (BAAF), follows concerns that thelaw is not being followed, and that many children in private foster careare 'invisible' (News, 14 August 2008). About 1,500 children in the UKare registered as living in private foster care, but the BAAF estimatesthe real figure is closer to 10,000. The BAAF is urging people to reportneighbours who are caring for children unrelated to them on a long-termbasis.
