Read with children ten minutes a day, parents urged

To mark this year's National Family Week (31 May to 6 June), the National Literacy Trust has launched a campaign calling on all families to spend at least ten minutes a day reading with their children.

The Tell Me a Story campaign aims to raise awareness of the need for families to support children's literacy in the home and the importance of having a literacy-rich home environment.

The campaign follows research by the Trust which found that 80 per cent of children who read above the expected level for their age have books of their own and 90 per cent of these children receive encouragement to read from their parents.

The second-ever National Family Week will see more than 5,000 events taking place across the country including picnics, sports days, storytime sessions and whole family feasts.
