Nursery World - Read with me

Read With Me Week takes place in the first week of November and its founders stress that it is not about teaching children to read but about creating a warm association with books and promoting reading as a shared activity. The week is based around a series of books about the Oddies: sock characters who inhabit sock-shaped islands in Oddie world and embody the concept of 'being different together'. According to the publisher, the books also answer the universal question - where do all the odd socks go?. The seven titles in the series, including Horse Rider Oddie, Police Oddie and Footy Oddie, are by Grant Slatter and are soon to be joined by a new story - Super Hero Oddie, written by a nine-year-old schoolgirl, Emma Pick, who won last year's Read with Me challenge to write a new Oddie's story.

The small paperback format of these books, combined with large pictures and simple text, makes them accessible to younger children and early readers alike. You can sign up for Read With Me Week, along with the 3,000 nurseries and schools that have already done so, to receive a free activity pack that contains everything you need to stage your own Read With Me Week, including lesson plans and activities devised by an educational resources team of KS1 and KS2 teachers and the National Literacy Trust.
