under a scheme designed to facilitate access to criminal records checks for the voluntary sector.

Applications for the enhanced and standard levels of criminal record check, commonly known as disclosure checks, for people intending to work with children must be countersigned by an authorised person who has registered in advance as a lead signatory and who is acting on behalf of the organisation offering the prospective employment or voluntary placement.

Private organisations need to register directly with Disclosure Scotland, the body that carries out criminal records checks, to countersign applications, at a cost of 150 for one countersignatory.

Alternatively they may apply for disclosures through a registered umbrella body.
