Yet again we see reports that the tax credit system is failing families. A massive 2.2 billion is to be recovered from almost 1.9 million vulnerable families for the second year running.

While tax credits are a valid way to support parents in building a better life for their children, the current system is both unhelpful and bewildering. Parents are confused about what they are entitled to, nurseries are reporting fraudulent claims, and now there are reports of families being left in dire straits because of the Inland Revenue clawing back overpayments. This points to a system in need of reform.
