Refuse unvaccinated children admission to nursery, say GPs

Pressure on general practitioners to meet Government immunisation targets has led some to suggest that unvaccinated children should be banned from going to a day nursery. Doctors who are struggling to meet Government vaccination targets for measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) said last week that it should be up to the Government to enforce them. This, they said, could be done by refusing nursery places to unvaccinated children.

Dr Mustafa Kapasi, chair of the Inverclyde Local Health Care Co-operative, said such measures had been taken in other countries, including the United States. He said, 'We should not as GPs have to force people into getting vaccinations. In some countries children do not have the ability to go to school or nursery if they do not have immunisation and some countries do not allow their parents to collect family allowance.'
