Respect this illness

I enjoyed reading what was a thoughtful and sensitive article dealing with the complex issues around touch in early years settings (Special report, 12 May). But I was concerned at the inappropriate use of the term 'schizophrenia' at the end, to refer to a divided or split approach to touch in professional debates. I think it is important to recognise that schizophrenia is a serious mental illness and current attempts to understand it don't make reference to the now out-of-date notion of split personality. In addition, it seems to me to be as inappropriate to use the term 'schizophrenia' in a negative descriptive way as it is to use terms such as 'black' in this way.

One in a hundred of the students, parents, carers and the wider community we work with as early years professionals, and many of the children, have to face this illness and its sometimes tragic consequences. They deserve our respect.
