If you are setting up a new early years facility or planning to carry out a full hazard assessment of your establishment, a handy publication to have by you is Safety in Day Care and Play Settings costing 6 from the Child Accident Prevention Trust (CAPT). This has been updated to incorporate all the most recent regulations and covers topics such as drawing up a safety plan, conducting a risk assessment, training staff and teaching the children how to keep themselves safe.

The CAPT also has a very useful website with a whole variety of downloadable resources, including quizzes on safety which could be used as a warm-up prior to staff training sessions.
