* The outdoor classroom blossomed at Hampton Court Flower Show as children from Coombes Infant School in Reading put on a dragon display for Catherine Ashton, minister for early years and school standards (above). The children were celebrating the official launch of the Growing Schools Garden, which demonstrates the best in schoolground design and use.

Features of the garden include a medieval herb garden from Mapledene Early Years Centre in Hackney, London, along with an alternative water system, well-dressing, a musical washing line, a weather station and ceramic caterpillars.

Baroness Ashton said the garden demonstrates how barren playgrounds can be transformed into exciting spaces on a modest budget. She said, 'What the Growing Schools Garden shows us is that classes take on a new dimension when they are taken outdoors.

'The Growing Schools Garden is a wonderful illustration of outdoor learning and I am very pleased we have the opportunity to share it with the thousands of visitors - children, parents, grandparents, teachers, governors and businesses -who will, I hope, be inspired to create special places in their school grounds.'
